SDG 4| Quality Education
Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
CUHK is dedicated to establishing a supportive learning atmosphere that offers top-tier education and equal chances to all students. The University also strives to disseminate knowledge and pioneering concepts to the broader community. Additionally, CUHK empowers learners with expertise and competencies concerning sustainable development through education, aiming to nurture socially conscious individuals.
Curriculum
74 related courses were offered in the 2023–24 academic year.
Policies
CUHK is committed to equal opportunities by advocating fair access to its educational resources, regardless of ethnicity, religion, disability, immigration status or gender. The Diversity and Inclusion Policy and the Policy on Equal Opportunities emphasize the rights of all members to equal access and opportunities in academic pursuits, while the Admission’s Policy clearly states that admissions at the University are based on merit, using consistent selection criteria, and are directed towards the selection of students who have the academic competence and motivation to benefit from the programmes which they intend to follow, irrespective of their origins, age and circumstances.
Teaching and learning
Alongside a consortium of universities from four continents, CUHK joined Future17 in 2022. This multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary programme initiated by the University of Exeter and Quacquarelli Symonds Limited has offered students from CUHK and across the world the opportunity to collaborate on developing and implementing solutions for achieving the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) globally. Participants first received training on SDGs and design thinking and were then assigned to international, interdisciplinary and multicultural teams. Each team was tasked with designing innovative sustainability solutions. Through the programme, students had the opportunity to study complex real-world global issues and gain experience in collaborating with overseas peers to develop practical solutions.

Nurturing global leaders
The Global Leadership Programme at CUHK, a new initiative launched in 2024, facilitates students’ career development through classroom training and experiential learning. Through training workshops, an adventure-based leadership camp, a Japan career exploration tour and mentoring experiences, 30 CUHK cadet leaders gained skills in cross-cultural competency and leadership at their earlier career development stage. In May 2024, the programme culminated in a final presentation where students addressed important global issues, namely sustainable peace, diversity and inclusion, ageing population and sustainability. Eight awardees began internships in August in Australia and New Zealand, furthering their impact on the global stage.

Education outreach in secondary schools
Since 2019, CUHK has been working in partnership with secondary schools across Hong Kong on the CUHK Jockey Club AI for the Future Project. The Project aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) literacy into the school curriculum, equipping students with the AI skills necessary for the future workplace. The Greater Bay Area AI for the Future Experiential Camp, held on 19 August 2024 at CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute, aims to enhance AI knowledge among students through workshops, competitions and hands-on activities. It fosters innovation, problem-solving and collaboration, and attracted over 300 teachers and students from Hong Kong and mainland cities. By nurturing young talent in the field of innovation and facilitating exchange among teachers, the Project will contribute to the advancement of AI education and applications in Hong Kong.

The award ceremony of the CUHK Faculty of Engineering’s Assessment Scheme for Engineering and Technology Education (ASSETE programme) was held on 6 July 2024, to honour outstanding students. The programme, launched in September 2022, has developed an assessment framework aligned with international STEM standards, and has successfully trained and assessed over 1,000 primary and secondary school students. It aims to expand participation to 60 schools in its second phase starting September 2024.

Enhancing teaching and learning with humour
In May 2024, CUHK hosted the 1st International Symposium on Humour Pedagogical Approaches. The symposium brought together global experts to examine the role of humour in education. Co-organized with other universities in Hong Kong, the event featured 11 international experts discussing how humour can enhance student engagement, relieve stress and improve academic performance. The symposium emphasized the importance of using appropriate humour in teaching to foster a positive learning environment and advocated for the establishment of a new international community of these pedagogical approaches.
