SDG 8| Decent Work and Economic Growth

Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all

CUHK is devoted to establishing a safe, stable, and efficient workplace for all its employees. The University seeks to cultivate future leaders by spearheading innovative programmes that offer invaluable experiences for our students to enhance their professional expertise and essential skills required for excelling in today’s interconnected economy. Through nurturing talent and advocating for economic resilience, CUHK actively helps to shape a more promising future not only for Hong Kong but also for the broader global community.

Curriculum

46 related courses were offered in the 2023–24 academic year.

Policies

The University prioritizes the provision of a safe and healthy working environment for its employees. This commitment is reflected in its Safety Policy, which emphasizes the occupational health and safety of all CUHK members. The University also offers safety information and training sessions to enhance safety awareness on campus. The University Safety Office provides safety information and training for a variety of workplaces, including offices, laboratories and workshops, to promote safety awareness on the campus.

CUHK’s Positive Workplace and Staff Development initiative fosters a nurturing environment that emphasizes continuous learning, self-improvement, and a thorough understanding of institutional policies. It promotes positive communication, empathy, and diverse perspectives while building teamwork through supportive relationships and collaborative environments. Trust and respect are enhanced by valuing colleagues’ efforts and sincerity through tangible measures, e.g. Positive Workplace Service Awards, Staff Appreciate Day, sponsorship for staff development (degree and non-degree), and time-release for staff to undertake community service.

The University is committed to upholding its Outsourcing Policy, which requires all units to exercise due care when considering outsourcing proposals. It is essential that proper mechanisms are in place to select and monitor the performance of contractors and to ensure that workers are treated fairly and paid justly.

Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship

CUHK celebrated the 10th anniversary of ‘CUHK Entrepreneur Day’ beyond the campus for the first time, featuring a large-scale Innovation and Entrepreneurship Exhibition in Sha Tin’s New Town Plaza in August 2024 for seven days. Themed ‘CUHK Innovations · Brightening the Future’, the public exhibition interactively showcased 23 research and entrepreneurial achievements of CUHK students, faculty and alumni. It aimed to promote CUHK’s startup ecosystem and foster a culture of innovation among young people in Hong Kong.

This exhibition was the first in a series of ‘CUHK Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ activities, including ‘CUHK Entrepreneur Day’ and ‘CUHK Innovation Day’ on the CUHK campus in September 2024.  These two events featured over 40 startup projects, showcasing the University’s vibrant entrepreneurial culture and fostering a number of partnerships between the project developers and interested stakeholders, including government officials industry leaders, the CUHK community and the general public.

Revolutionizing sports industry

CUHK launched the Global Sports and Wellness Innovation Centre (GSWIC) in February 2024.  The AI-based Automatic Retinal Image Analysis technology, initially used for assessing disease risks, will now be applied to the sports industry.  The technology is capable of predicting athletic performance, detecting minor injuries and monitoring rehabilitation.  GSWIC aims to integrate research, academic and industry in order to revolutionize the sports industry and promote health.

Inspiring talent

The Smart Logistics Datathon 2024, organized by the Asian Institute of Supply Chains & Logistics (AISCL) at CUHK, was held at Hong Kong Cyberport in April 2024.  20 teams from 20 top universities in Asia were selected as the finalists.  AISCL also extended the Datathon’s reach to Asian secondary schools for the first time, selecting 10 teams to form a Secondary School League.  A total of 82 students successfully completed the 35-hour Datathon.  Judges were impressed by the participants’ data-driven analyses, and industry leaders encouraged students to pursue careers in logistics.

Fostering entrepreneurship

The Infinity Room, CUHK’s first student-run coffee shop, began trial operations in June 2024 and officially opened on 13 September 2024.  It emerged from the CU-SuCCeSS pitching competition, a collaborative initiative by the Office of Student Affairs, the Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services and the Minor Programme in Entrepreneurship and Innovation to foster entrepreneurship.  The programme provided extensive training to students, enhancing their creativity and business skills.  The winning team earned the opportunity to run the coffee shop at John Fulton Centre for up to two years.
